Ukrainian lesson #4. Seasons and months

Names of Ukrainian months have slavic origin and are completely different from Russian names of monthes.

If you are from slavik country or know some slavic language, you can find something similar.
If you know Ukrainian language a little, you can easily to remember this moths, because it makes sence in Ukrainian. At first we see the list of monthes, and then I explain the meaning.
We learn here also how to use monthes in the language.


At first we become from seasons - it's simple.

Січень

Sichen'

From the word "січе" (siche) - swish. Weather with snow swishes so much.

Лютий

Lyutyj

Literally can be translated as fierce. The weather is fierce in this month. We have strong wind and sometimes very cold weather.

Березень

Berezen'

From the name of береза (bereza) - birch. Birch produce it's very useful juice and traditionally people drink it.

Квітень

Kviten'

From the word квіти (kvity) - flowers. Different flowers grown up in this month.

Травень

Traven'

From the word трави (travy) - herbs. Because herbs become grown up so fast in this month.

Червень

Cherven'

From the word червоний (chervonyj) - red. Cherry and bird-cherry you can find this month. 
They have mostly red colour, so that's became the ground for name of march.

Липень

Lypen'

From the word липа (lypa) - linden. You can find linden blossoms this year.

Серпень

Serpen'

From the word серп - sickle. It's traditional ukrainian tools which was used in this month. 
Now I guess everybody use tractor.

Вересень

Veresen'

From the word верес (veres) - heather. You can find heather this month.

Жовтень

Zhovten'

From the word жовтий (zhovtyj) - yellow. All leafage become yellow and orange.

Листопад

Lystopad

It's the most simple. This word is combination of two other - листя і падати (lystya, padaty) that means leafage and fall down. 

Грудень

Gruden'
